What it holds

Most docks collect the same pile by midsummer. A dock box handles the small stuff. A shelter on shore takes the rest, and you can walk in and stack it.

Heights are at the peak. The roof slopes toward the back, so stand paddles and skis up front and keep the low stuff in the rear.

Where it goes: beside the dock or on it

Most people set it on shore: the lot, the patio, the driveway or a pad a short walk from the dock. It can go on the dock too, on a lake or on the coast. Check three things first:

Width. Ameren (Lake of the Ozarks) and Georgia Power's north Georgia lakes cap residential dock walkways at 6 ft. Outside, the Sport is 45 in wide, the Touring 56 in and the Deluxe 80 in (about 6 ft 8 in), so leave room to walk past.
Your lake's rules. On TVA lakes, fully enclosed storage on a dock is capped at 32 sq ft, measured outside (18 CFR 1304.204). Our smallest shelter covers about 34, so on a TVA lake it goes on shore. Ameren's rules for Lake of the Ozarks prohibit fabric enclosures on docks. Marinas and HOAs set their own.
Load. Floating docks carry light loads. Ameren's design figure for an uncovered dock deck is 20 lb per square foot. The shelter weighs 61 to 82 lb, so it's what you pack inside that adds up. Spread it out instead of stacking it in one spot.

Shore lots have rules too, from setbacks to shed size limits, so check with your lake authority, harbor or HOA before you set up. Near salt water, rinse the frame with fresh water now and then. It can even go on the deck of a big boat that's tied up, though that's the least likely spot. For a dock or a boat, email us first and we'll talk through size and how to tie it down.

Setup and anchoring

1. Set it up: about 20 to 30 minutes. The Sport weighs 61 lb, the Touring 75 and the Deluxe 82.
2. Concrete or asphalt: bolt it down with the anchor bolts in the box (6 with the Sport and Touring, 8 with the Deluxe).
3. Gravel, grass or firm ground: build a wood base first. The wood base guide has the cut list: 4 x 10 ft for the Sport, 5 x 12 for the Touring, 7 x 12 for the Deluxe.
4. On a dock or a boat deck: the anchor bolts are made for concrete or asphalt, so email us first and we'll talk through tying it down.
5. Lock it: the cover locks closed. The locking hardware is built in; bring your own lock.

Using the Double Duty UV cover? Take it off before high winds. Lake lots tend to have big trees. The steel frame protects what's inside from falling branches and debris, but no portable shelter is built to stop a falling tree. Seal the bottom edges with the wood base or weights, and check inside before you close it.

Shelter or dock box?

Different jobs. A dock box sits on the dock and holds what you grab every trip. The shelter sits on shore and holds what won't fit in a box. Plenty of lake houses end up with both.
