Riding Mower Shelter: Park the Tractor Under a Locking Roof

A lawn tractor with a 42-inch deck fits our Touring Shelter, as long as the discharge chute is flipped up. The Touring is 54 inches wide inside. A John Deere S120 is 46.5 inches wide with its chute raised. Here's the math, and how to check your own mower in a few minutes.

Will my riding mower fit? The numbers

On a mower, width is the whole question, and the discharge chute is the part that sticks out. Length and height are easy. A 42-inch lawn tractor is about 70 inches long and 44 tall, and the Touring is 136 inches long inside. Want the bigger picture on sheds, covers and garages? Read our lawn mower storage guide.

John Deere S120, 42" deck

69.7" L x 55.2" W (chute down) x 44" H. 46.5" W with the chute raised.

Fits with the chute raised: 7.5" of width to spare. With the chute down it's 55.2", too wide.

Cub Cadet XT1 LT42

68" L x 50" W (deck) x 42.5" H

Fits the Touring: 4" of width and 68" of length to spare.

48" decks and wider

Bigger lawn and garden tractors, wide zero-turns

Often too wide for the Touring. Measure with the chute up and email us. The Deluxe is 78" wide inside.

Our Sport Shelter

43" wide inside

Too narrow for a lawn tractor with its deck on.

Mower sizes: John Deere's S120 spec table (as listed by a Deere dealer) and TractorData for the Cub Cadet XT1 LT42. Decks, chutes and baggers change the width, so go by your own tape measure.

Headroom inside the Touring, measured from the front

24" to about 88" back: 71" or more (77.75" at the peak)
95" back: 67.3"
101" back: 63.3"
114" back: 49.2"
120.5" back: 40.2"

A lawn tractor is about 44" tall at the steering wheel, so headroom isn't an issue. Park it nose-first with the front bumper a few inches back from the front wall, which leans in. That leaves about 5 feet of floor behind it. The roof drops toward the back, so keep tall stuff toward the middle.

Measure your mower in 3 minutes

1. Width: flip the discharge chute up, then measure the widest point. That's usually the deck.
2. Length: front bumper to the back of the mower, hitch or bagger included.
3. Height: ground to the top of the steering wheel or seat back.
4. Compare: about 52" wide or less with the chute up, and you're in Touring range.

Run a rear bagger? It adds length and can add width. Measure with it on, or plan to take it off before you park.

The Touring Shelter for your mower

A 16-gauge steel frame that folds back like a fan on a pivot hub, under a 600D urethane-coated polyester cover with taped seams. Open it, drive in, close it, lock it. Six anchor bolts come with it for concrete or asphalt, and setup takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The frame carries a 10-year warranty for the original owner. We're a small American family business in Soquel, California, building these for 18+ years.

Riding mower shelter questions

Will a zero-turn fit? Measure it. Zero-turns are lower than a lawn tractor, but their decks are often wider. About 52" wide or less with the chute up is Touring range. Wider than that, email us about the Deluxe.

Do I need the rubber floor? No, but it keeps the tires off damp ground. The Touring floor is $122.95 on its own, or it comes in the Complete Kit.

Can it sit on grass? Yes, on a wood base. The shelter has no built-in floor, so it sits on whatever is under it. Our wood base guide has the cut list. The Touring base is 5 x 12 ft.

Does it lock? Yes. The cover locks closed, so the mower is out of sight and locked up.
