Description

Do you need to drain the gas before winter storage? Not if you treat it. STA-BIL Storage keeps fuel fresh for up to 24 months and stops the gum and varnish that clog a motorcycle’s carb or injectors while it sits. Use it on anything gasoline-powered that will sit 30 days or longer.

The dose is the same in every size: 1 oz treats 2.5 gallons. A 5-gallon tank takes 2 oz. A 3.5-gallon sportbike tank takes a little under 1.5 oz.

Which size?

  • 10 oz: treats 25 gallons. The one-bike size, enough for a typical motorcycle tank several times over. It’s the bottle in our Winter Storage Kit.
  • 16 oz: treats 40 gallons. A lot of winters for a 5-gallon tank, or a couple of bikes.
  • 32 oz: treats 80 gallons. A couple of bikes, a trike, the generator and the spare gas can.
  • 1 gallon: treats 320 gallons. For a shop winterizing customer bikes, a riding club, or a garage with a whole fleet of bikes, toys and equipment.

Do it in this order

  • Add the stabilizer to fresh gas. Old gas that’s already turning won’t come back.
  • Fill the tank to about 95% so there’s less air space for condensation.
  • Run the engine 5 minutes so treated fuel reaches the carb or injectors.

Tip from STA-BIL: treat the gas can while the gas is fresh, right at the pump, and everything you fill from that can is treated.

It works in all gasoline, including ethanol blends up to E-85 and non-ethanol, and in 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines. STA-BIL says it also removes water to prevent corrosion, cleans carburetors and fuel injectors and guards against gum, varnish and rust. Made in the USA.

Fuel is one part of the job. Our motorcycle storage guide covers the battery, tires and cover. STA-BIL’s own motorcycle tip is a good one: store the bike somewhere dry, away from windows so sunlight doesn’t fade the paint. For a bike that lives outside, a Speedway Shelter gives it a covered spot.

Common Questions

motorcycle in the snow, time to winterize

How much STA-BIL do I add per gallon?
1 oz treats 2.5 gallons of gas. For a 5-gallon motorcycle tank that’s 2 oz. The 10 oz bottle treats 25 gallons, the 16 oz treats 40, the 32 oz treats 80 and the gallon treats 320.

Should I fill the tank before storing my motorcycle?
Yes. STA-BIL says to fill the tank about 95% with fresh fuel after adding the stabilizer. Less air space means less condensation while the bike sits. Then run the engine 5 minutes.

Do I need to drain the gas before storing my bike?
No. STA-BIL says treating the fuel eliminates the need to drain it before storage. It keeps gas fresh for up to 24 months and prevents gum and varnish build-up.
